It was used exclusively on our lake in the Whiteshell for 30-some years before the motor became an issue, us kids all grew up, and it fell out of use. Since then it has sat in our boathouse, and it's time to pass it on. Other than needing a refinishing it's in great shape. There is some rash in the front from breaking ice but the skiff has not been used in over 20 years and has not been fiberglassed and is an excellent antique of a typical Lake Winnebago (Wisconsin) area skiff of the era. After speaking to some historians, we have been unable to identify the manufacturer and it is possible it is homemade.

3057316 Feet 1910 Mullins Sheet Metal Co. Rowing Skiff$1,600
The Mullins Sheet Metal Company was originally in the business of creating decorative plates for stoves and other metal appliances of the early twentieth century. Then out of necessity for business the owner decided to make himself a rowing skiff out of metal. The birth of the Mullins steel boat is the result and this is a prime example of that craft. Some dings and dents exist of course in the metal skin, but the boat is remarkably original and very pleasant to look at. Steel over a wooden frame and solid in every way. A unique classic boat that would serve very well as a daily user and create some comments at the dock.

3744316 Feet 1915 F.H. Darrow Portable Rowboat$3,900
Steel manufacturing was quite an industry in the early 1900's, and manufacturers such as Mullins and F.H. Darrow took advantage of the growing market for watercraft and began to build marketable boats. F.H. Darrow Steel Boat Manufacturing Co. built this portable rowboat around 1915 when trailers were uncommon and the automobile was quickly gaining in popularity. They developed an ingenious design where a 16' rowboat could be broken down into 3 independent segments, nested one inside the other, and mounted on the running board of a car! Not only is the boat easily portable; each section can float independently. This design is very unique and represents an era when the concept of travel by road took off! She has been nicely restored and is complete with oars. Full documentation available.

Some interesting features make this gorgeous boat stand out such from other skiffs such as a retractable center board and bronze mast clamp. The mast clamp makes setting the mast a simple tilt up rather than lifting which is unfriendly to the back and risks capsizing. This skiff was restored by Milt Carnegie of the 1000 Islands in the late 70's who was considered to be one of the best skiff restorers in the area. Today it is essentially a new boat and needs only varnishing and painting before putting it back in the water. "Old Spice" is complete with an original Red Wing 25hp, 4 cylinder inboard engine. Not many of these early launches survived, and this example is a true barn find.
